Venice between Kitchen and Atelier

by Zaira Zarotti (The Freaky Table)

I met Zaira while I was the Art Director of D la Repubblica. She was discovered through Instagram by one of my colleagues. Seeing how beautiful her work was, I called her to do features for the food section of the magazine. After leaving D in September 2020 and returning to Venice full time, I asked her if she ever thought about doing a cookbook. She enthusiastically replied that she had been working on an idea that was a reflection of her Venetian lifestyle in an artistic household, one that demonstrated the relationship between the kitchen and the artist studio and her research involving authentic – and often forgotten – recipes passed down through generations. Her evocative and poetic photographs in chiaroscuro remind us of Dutch paintings but with a contemporary twist. I brought the project to the publisher Elzeviro – produced, designed, translated and edited the English version. It was printed in Italy in September 2024.
